One last look at Ecuador!

Hey all!!!!

i hope your summer is going well!

i am currently sitting in my room in quito packing up my bags for my 640am flight tomorrow! these last 6 weeks have flown by and i am just tryinig to tie up some loose ends before i head back to the states.

this last week and a half has been pretty cool as i have traveled to shell and back.

we traveled down the friday before last and did some tourist things. we toured a old plantation, ate mora icecream, saw the volcanos tunguragua, cotopaxi, and sanguay, took a cable car over a waterfall, and visited a balsa wood store.

when we got down to shell we toured the Alas de Socorro (Ecuadorian Mission Aviation Fellowship) hangar and the HCJB Hospital Vozandes. We also got a tour of the house that Nate Saint built and lived in while he worked here in ecuador which was amazing!

it really boggles your mind when you show up to a spot that youve heard so much about growing up, a place with so much history and spiritual significance in the flow of time. just seeing it was pretty amazing. seeing his house, the runway, and his legacy. we also heard all sorts of stories about him and other missionaries that have given to the cause of christ.

one story as related by Fred Schmidt (the MAF missionary i am staying with, who also grew up in shell ecuador) was about those men who killed nate saint and the rest. within the last few years mincaye has been traveling and talking about his experience. while listening to some music with the people he is traveling with, he suddenly got very silent and then excited and said, "thats what we heard!" however he was not understood. when the song was played again he said "thats what we heard when it happened!" later, at a church he was talking at he saw the choir and then got excited again saying, "thats what we saw" appearently while the killings were happening the saw and heard these beings, possibly angels, and immediately afterward ran and hid farway in the jungle because they realized what they did was wrong and were afraid of these beings who were in the air! when asked why they didnt tell anyone they replied that they were afriad that everyone would think that they were crazy!

wow.

anyways, there were many other stories and amzing times. wow again.

so i worked at the hospital with a nurse while i was down there which was very interesting! they definitely do not do things the way we do in the states!!!! man o man.

so i helped with 2 endoscopes which was an experience in and of itself! so, the girl comes in and they give her a sedative, but they dont have enough of the right equipment to put her completely out, moniters and such, so they leave her semiconsious while they shove this tube down her throat!!!!! so here i am holding her hands, with my one elbow holding her hip and the other hand holding her shoulder so she cant move and fight!!! ha! what a good time! man was that interesting! but i got to see a scope done and see the insides of some people.

i also helped by doing vital signs for the nurses and changing beds, which leads to another interesting story. so here i am cleaning a bed with this cleaning agent and the nurse asks me if i know what im using, and i of course say no. she turns and smiles at me and says..... "moon shine" apperently buying a high proof sugarcane RUM is cheaper than a regular bleach or other antiseptic! ha!

anyways, there are many more stories that i can tell when i get back.

here are some of the pictures for the week

Back to quito from the jungle

hey everyone!

i hope your summer is going as well as mine is. whats news in your part of the world?

yesterday evening i got back to quito from same, a town on the northwestern coast of ecuador. i had been staying there with a missionary family and a family from the states who does alot of supporting of missions here in ecuador. we were staying at the missions house until friday when we flew into santo domingo de oncele. Fred Schmidt flew us into a small airstrip in the northern jungle which was quite the experience in its self. the air strip is on the top of a ridge that has been cleared of trees, however, on one end the strip is 200ft above sea level and on the other end it is 250, which makes for an interesting landings. this strip was just opened 2 years ago but hasnt been used that often so it was a bit rough on the landings. also, part of the strip wants to wash away so they have to keep on that.

anyways, so we landed in this village and all these kids come running out to meet the plane. they just want to touch it, grab onto you and talk with you. it was a riot. ha. we take a tour of the village and they show us the whole place from thier jail to their churches and school.

one guy shows us 2 partially dug out canoes, the kind that they take a tree trunk and hollow it out, and explains about them. appearently a person who is good at making canoes can make 1 USD a day for working on the canoe and one canoe takes about 30 days! that is alot of hard hot work for only earning 30 USD.

afterevery body gets flow in, we load up in canoes and head off down the rio oncele which was amazing! all the jungle around you! wow! a few hours down the river and we are picked up by 2 buses and driven back down the coast to same.

anyways, then, yesterday we came back to quito.

this week is going to be cool!

first i hope to help out at pan de vida again this wednesday (a ministry to poor ecuadorians living in quito) then we are going to go to the old city and do a bit of tourism on friday, and then on saturday we are going to drive down to SHELL!!! (the homebase of nate saint and jim elliot) im not sure how long we will stay in shell, but i may have the opportunity to go out into the jungle with a missions team and also help in the hospital in shell. it should be an amazing time!!!

Here are the pictures from this week. i finally got them uploaded!
